Stay Active While Aging

Staying active is a key contributor to maintaining vitality and independence in the golden years. Participating in organized exercise programs or simple routines around the house breaks the cycle of inactivity and can greatly improve overall health and mental acuity.

Many older people have the wrong notion that exercise means being surrounded by special equipment, going to a gym, or running track. This is not necessarily the case.

If access is unavailable to a weight room or swimming pool, then use everyday items to work out. Try watching television with a one-pound bag of rice wrapped over a knee to do leg exercises. Or, grab a can of vegetables and work arm muscles during a portion of a favorite program.

Daily chores such as house cleaning, lawn care, walking the dog, or painting can provide exercise as well. A break from a sedentary lifestyle is often all that is needed to stay healthy and independent.
