UH College of Pharmacy Offers Medication Reviews to Seniors Not sure if you should be taking an herbal remedy with your prescription? Wondering if taking one prescription might interact with another one? Don't know why you were given a certain prescription? The University of Houston College of Pharmacy can help answer these questions and more that seniors may have during a Brown Bag Medication Review. At a Brown Bag Medication Review, senior citizens are encouraged to round up all of their medications, vitamins and herbal supplements and bring them in for a consultation with a team of pharmacy students, who are supervised by pharmacists. "This is a great opportunity for the students to put their knowledge of pharmacy to work," says Dr. Andrea Smesny, pharmacy skills program coordinator at the college. At the reviews, special stations are set up, which can include blood pressure monitoring, osteoporosis screenings and diabetic foot exams. Vial of Life registration forms are also available, which allow emergency medical services to treat patients according to their medical history. Senior centers and other organizations are encouraged to call Dr. Smesny to set up such a medication review. She can be reached at 713/743-1298 or Asmesny@bayou.uh.edu. - DARLA BROWN ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/07_01_00/page_11.html |
