Medical Students Assist HISD Teachers Four Baylor College of Medicine graduate students are concluding the first year of a partnership program with Houston Independent School District life science teachers. The program is part of an effort by the National Science Foundation to improve the quality of science instruction in schools. Using forensic science, graduate student Monica Humby developed a new set of genetics class lessons and taught lab modules for students at Waltrip High School. Joseph Marx and Kimberly Huntzinger teamed up to teach human body systems at Milby High School. Graduate student David Chang covered several genetics topics at Washington High School. "This program provides Baylor graduate student scientists with wonderful opportunities to improve their teaching skills while serving as role models for students who otherwise might not consider science careers," said Dr. Nancy Moreno, project director. The National Science Foundation grant covered the full stipend of these four graduate student fellows for the one-year duration of the program. Each fellow participated in education-related activities for approximately 15 hours each week. – John Tyler ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/06_15_02/page_10.html |
