UT-Houston Faculty Listed Among "Best Doctors in America"

Forty faculty members from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston have been selected by their peers nationwide for inclusion in the 2002 "Best Doctors in America" database, which contains the names and professional profiles of approximately 31,000 doctors in more than 40 medical specialties. Listings are determined through a survey of more than 30,000 U.S. doctors who were asked to name the most outstanding clinical practitioners in their specialties.

Dr. James T. Willerson, president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, is among the top cardiologists named in the online guide, and UT-Houston Medical School’s dean, Dr. L. Maximilian Buja, is listed for his expertise in pathology.

UT-Houston faculty members appear in 14 of the more than 40 medical specialties listed in the proprietary database. They include Drs. Fabrizia Faustinella for internal medicine (general), Robert W. Guynn for psychiatry, Robert F. Lodato for pulmonary and critical care medicine, Margaret O. Uthman for pathology, and Thomas O. Clanton for orthopedics.

Also listed are Drs. Gailen D. Marshall Jr. for allergy and immunology; Stanford M. Goldman for radiology; and Jeffrey Katz for anesthesiology. Listed UT-Houston family medicine specialists are Drs. Carlos A. Moreno and Robert S. Tan. Drs. Barbara E. Murray and John H. Rex are cited for expertise in infectious diseases. In addition to Dr. Willerson, other cardiovascular specialists on the list are Drs. Francisco Fuentes and Richard W. Smalling.

Others listed include Drs. James A. Ferrendelli, James C. Grotta, Lewis B. Morgenstern and Jerry S. Wolinsky for neurology; Drs. C.Y. Joseph Chang and Michael D. Poole for otolaryngology; and Drs. Larry D. Scott and Joseph H. Sellin in gastroenterology. Dr. Ian J. Butler is listed for child neurology. Recognized as "best" pediatric specialists are Drs. Thomas G. Cleary, Sharon Crandell, Susan E. Denson, Marilyn Doyle, Kathleen Ann Kennedy, Fernando R. Moya, Hope Northrup, Ronald Jay Portman and Jon Edward Tyson. Drs. Richard Andrassy, Barry D. Kahan, Frank G. Moody, John R. Potts III, and Charles Thomas Van Buren are recognized for surgery, and Dr. Hazim Jawad Safi is named for thoracic surgery.
