If you build it, they will come If you build it, they will come. And come they have. In its first full year of operation, the new Strawberry Health Center in Pasadena has seen 20 percent more patients than last year, making it one of the busiest health centers in the Harris County Hospital District. Since relocating to its new facility last May, staff has seen nearly 12,000 more patient visits than the previous year. They now see an average of 257 patients a day compared to 189 a year ago. In all, they saw 58,742 patient visits compared to 46,965 a year ago. "Over the year, we've seen a lot of people that are new to Strawberry and the Hospital District," says Elaine Welch, acting director of Strawberry. "Our new location has made it easier for people to find us." Many of the new patients visiting Strawberry are from the surrounding areas including Galena Park, Deer Park, Jacinto City and South Houston. For many residents of the area, it's now more convenient to visit Strawberry for medical care and apply for a Hospital District Gold Card. The Gold Card grants the bearer access to any of the Hospital District services and is available to all county residents. The new Strawberry facility was officially dedicated May 22, 1999. However, its history of serving Pasadena stems back to 1977. The 33,000-square-foot facility is located at 927 E. Shaw St. near the intersection of Pasadena Boulevard and State Highway 225. Its present location is nearly triple the size of its previous site. The new building has 20 more examination rooms and separate areas (pods) for adult and pediatric care. In addition, the center houses a full dental center and a vision care center. - JOHN MARTINEZ ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/06_15_00/page_11.html |
