UT TeleCampus Goes On-Line

The University of Texas launched the UT TeleCampus, an electronic bridge to the services available on-site at UT campuses, on May 14 from its Board of Regents meeting at UT-Permian Basin. The videoconference connected members of 11 University of Texas sites, including UT-Houston Health Science Center, around the state for a discussion and demonstration of the virtual campus.

press conference to launch the UT TeleCampus.

"We already have distance education," said Dr. Darcy W. Hardy, director of the UT TeleCampus. "We needed the support structure for those learners."

The UT TeleCampus will focus on student services, providing opportunities for distance learners to access financial aid assistance, registration, admissions, advising, and library materials. The virtual site also includes course chat rooms for faculty and students as well as a commons area with art exhibits and a game room.

The UT System offers more than 200 distance learning courses. The UT-Houston School of Public Health and the School of Nursing are scheduled to offer several classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels through the UT TeleCampus this fall. Admissions to these courses vary. Some of the courses will be conducted as two-way videos with other UT campuses while others are web-based.

The web address for the UT TeleCampus is www.uol.com/telecampus.
