Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebrated June 5

St. Luke’s Texas Cancer Institute will celebrate National Cancer Survivors’ Day on St. Luke’s Skybridge, 6624 Fannin (accessible via St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital or St. Luke’s Medical Tower) Thursday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This annual event celebrates and enhances the quality of life for cancer survivors by introducing them to and reminding them of hospital and community support systems. The event welcomes cancer patients, survivors, family members, friends and caregivers,” said Brian J. Miles, M.D., medical director of St. Luke’s Texas Cancer Institute.

Saks Fifth Avenue will be on hand with cosmetic lines for personalized demonstrations, makeovers and cosmetic solutions. Interactive displays will be exhibited by the Second Silhouette; Women’s Health Boutique; Tom Magliaro’s Hair Additions; the Dahn Holistic Center; Meditation Fitness; Ladies of the Light; CanCare; the Sisters Network; Cancer Counseling Inc.; Whole Foods Market; and other community partners.

St. Luke’s support services will also be on hand, including oncology nurses, social workers, dietitians, and physical and radiation therapists, as well as the hospital’s blood bank, pastoral care representatives, auxiliary, Women’s Center, and Web Center. Free gifts and refreshments will be available.

“This 16th anniversary celebration – celebrated in more than 700 communities throughout North America – is a victorious milestone for cancer survivors,” said Miles. “At this time, we pause to honor all people around the world who are living with a history of cancer, including America’s 8.9 million cancer survivors. It’s also a day to acknowledge the contributions of their families, friends and health care providers.”
