First Web-Based Textbook Focuses on Tumors of the Head and Neck

The faculty members at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center have written many books on treatment of malignant diseases, but now some have published the first Internet-based textbook.

The new Web book, "Multidisplinary Care of Head and Neck Cancer," focuses on the current approaches utilized for the treatment of cancer and other tumors of the head and neck. Reflecting the principles of M.D. Anderson, the book is interdisciplinary in its approach, bringing together a variety of experts for a comprehensive look at the diseases and special needs of patients with cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, nasal cavity and sinuses, jaw, thyroid, salivary gland, skull base, eye and skin of the head and neck region.

The book covers intricate surgical treatments that restore form and function, rehabilitation of speech and swallowing, nutrition and pain management. In addition to surgical management for some cancers, other treatment topics include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, oncologic dentistry and prosthodontics. Accompanying the information are actual diagnostic images, pathology microphotographs and other graphics.

The Web book, targeted to health care professionals and students, presents M.D. Anderson’s clinical experience in head and neck cancer, references appropriate publications in the medical literature and focuses on the patient’s quality of life.

Leading the project as Web book editor is Dr. Helmuth Goepfert, chairman of M.D. Anderson’s department of head and neck surgery, who brought together a team of experts in the field.

"We believe this is the first medical textbook developed specifically for use on the Internet," said Dr. Goepfert. "Because of the medium we’re using, the information on new techniques and research findings can be updated regularly and quickly, allowing the book to evolve continually."

"The Web book was developed to share what we have learned over the last 60 years and serve as a medium for others to expand their experience and give us feedback," continued Dr. Goepfert.

Dr. Goepfert, a surgeon on the M.D. Anderson faculty since 1971, is well known for his contributions to conservation treatment, his collaboration with colleagues in radiation oncology and medical oncology, and the development of protocols to preserve voice and other vital functions for many patients with head and neck tumors. He has been an editor, and has authored or co-authored more than 250 scientific publications and book chapters. Access to the Web book is available at http://www.headneckcancer.org.
