Blood Center Hosts Transfusion Lectureship

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center hosted the sixth annual Bill T. Teague Lectureship in Transfusion Medicine May 16. The lectureship, presented by the Blood Center’s Education and Research Committee, recognizes contributions to the field of blood banking and transfusion medicine by Bill T. Teague, Blood Center president and chief executive officer. The forum presents lectures by nationally recognized authorities in all areas of transfusion medicine, blood banking science, administration and technology.

This year’s guest lecturer was Dr. Marion E. Reid, head of the immunochemistry laboratory at the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute and director of the immunohematology laboratory at the New York Blood Center. Dr. Reid is a native of England, where she trained as a medical technologist specializing in blood transfusion. Having received several grants, she is currently principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health’s specialized center of research grant on blood groups in health and disease.

Dr. Reid has also served as the division manager at the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory in Bristol, England and held positions as an immunohematology specialist in the transfusion service of San Francisco General Hospital, and in the reference laboratory at the Central California Region of the American Red Cross.

In addition to Dr. Reid’s lecture, a $250 medical technology scholarship was awarded to Ray Michael Steen and Angela Hanson-Steen of The University of Texas Medical Branch. The married couple, who will graduate in August, completed a study titled "The Use of the Gram Stain to Screen Platelet Concentrates for Bacterial Contamination."
