Doctors Orchestra Performance Marries Music and Art By DARLA BROWN The University of Texas Medical School at Houston Doctors Orchestra of Houston will present its “Music and Pictures” concert May 31 at 7 p.m. and June 1 at 2 p.m. in the new Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall. “All of the musical selections have something to do with a painting that inspired the composers to write the music,” explained director Libi Lebel. The inspirational paintings will be shown on a big screen, accompanied by their related songs. The paintings include Paul Hindemith’s “Angel Concert,” Ottorino Respighi’s “Birth of Venus” and “Spring,” Herbert L. Clarke’s “Carnival of Venice,” and Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures in Exhibition.” Other artwork, including pieces from Texas Children’s Hospital patients, will also be on display. Texas Heart Institute surgeon Grady Hallman, M.D., will be the featured euphonium soloist on “Carnival of Venice.” “Dr. Hallman is a trombone player in our orchestra and he is a true virtuoso on the euphonium, a tenor tuba instrument. He is absolutely amazing. I have rarely heard someone play so well,” Lebel said. Hallman, a clinical professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, performed the first successful coronary graft operation in 1962. He also plays euphonium in the Gulf Coast Concert Band, trombone in the Houston Concert Band, and is a member of a brass quintet and a trombone quartet. With this concert, the Doctors Orchestra is celebrating its corporate sponsorship by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association College Retirement Equities Fund, known as TIAA-CREF, which gave $100,000 to sponsor the orchestra over three years. Charles Schwab gave the group $10,000 for its last concert, becoming the orchestra’s first corporate underwriter. “With this support, we can now finally achieve our goal of raising money for medical research and charities,” Lebel said. Proceeds from the “Music and Pictures” concerts will go toward Texas Children’s Hospital’s “Making a Mark” Art Program and the DeBakey High School for Health Professions. This month, the orchestra made its first donation from proceeds earned during its last concert to the Baylor Charity Ball and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. “This check isn’t a big check, but it’s the first step,” Lebel said of the donation to UT-Houston. Tickets for the upcoming concerts are $20 for adults and $10 for students and children. They may be purchased at Cactus Records, (713) 526-9272, or at Joel’s Classical Shop, (713) 665-0954.
