Long-Time Veterans’ Advocate Retires by BOBBI GRUNER Houston VA Medical Center After 25 years of representing the interests of veterans at the Houston VA Medical Center, Col. Peter Stack has retired. As a past state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Stack represented the views of veterans and veteran service organizations on the Deans Committee – a committee which governs the relationship between the hospital and the various medical schools affiliated with the hospital. The members review research, clinical practices and programs, and administer the resident program and dual physician-staffing program. As a member of the committee, Stack was dedicated to making sure doctors, nurses, and the administration always put veterans’ interests first. On April 15, 1949, the Houston VA Medical Center was designated as a teaching hospital, affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine. The hospital accepted 22 residents into its training and education programs in its first year. "The affiliation of the Veterans Administration hospital and Baylor College of Medicine has served a double purpose – to give veterans the highest standard of medical care and to enable Baylor to give training in some departments available nowhere else in the south," said Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, Baylor Chancellor Emeritus, also a member of the Deans Committee, and a driving force behind the Houston VA Medical Center’s position in the medical community. Most physicians practicing at the Houston VA Medical Center also are on the Baylor staff. ©1996-2002 Texas Medical Center
