Click It or Ticket
Campaign Urges Motorists to Buckle Up

The biggest challenge to traffic-related injury prevention efforts are the drivers and passengers who still don’t buckle up. Nearly one in four Texans fit that category.

To combat this problem, The Texas Departments of Public Safety and Transportation are joining with hundreds of police and sheriff’s departments throughout the state to launch a campaign called Click it or Ticket Texas. "Either buckle up or get a ticket" is the campaign’s main message, which will be conveyed during a two-week media and community education blitz beginning May 20. In addition, local police and state troopers will blanket streets and highways during this time to enforce the state’s seat-belt and car-seat laws for adults and children.

The Click it or Ticket Texas campaign has been conducted in other parts of the country and resulted in a nearly 9 percent increase in seat belt use. That kind of boost translates into about 241 fewer traffic deaths and more than 5,000 fewer injuries in Texas every year.

Members of the medical community are needed to help publicize the campaign. Support from public health officials, physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians and other members of the medical community provides essential credibility to the campaign’s strong enforcement message and helps to convince the driving public to buckle up.
