More than $140,000 was raised for student scholarships and faculty research through the PARTNERS annual spring luncheon April 10. This community group supports the mission of The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston.

"By providing scholarships to nursing students, we are able to help alleviate the nursing shortage," said PARTNERS chairman Sara Howell. "We support students at baccalaureate, master and doctoral levels, because nurses are needed as clinicians, researchers and teachers."

Roy and Phyllis Huffington, supporters of numerous causes in the Texas Medical Center, were honorees of the group this year. Approximately 430 attended the event, chaired by Lisa Kanaly, to honor the Huffingtons and enjoy a talk by author and Houston Chronicle syndicated columnist Jacquelyn Mitchard.

Attendees included Dr. Patricia L. Starck, the John P. McGovern Distinguished Professor and dean of the nursing school, administrators, faculty members, students, PARTNERS members and guests.

Mary Martha Stinnett, who will assume chairmanship of the group in June, said she wants more of the members to tour the school during her tenure, to make sure "they all know what an outstanding school of nursing we have, and to get them even more excited about their involvement with the school. I also want to help give the public a keen awareness of nursing research, especially the research taking place at the School of Nursing."
