Web Site Offers Molecular Biology Approaches to Surgery Surgeons now have online access to a training session in molecular biology approaches to surgery at a Web site developed through the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. "It is critical for surgeons to understand the increasing importance of molecular biology in the treatment of surgical diseases," said Dr. F. Charles Brunicardi, chairman of the surgery department. "The genetic basis of cancer formation and the use of new tumor markers have important applications for surgeons." The Continuing Medical Education course on the Web site, found at http://www.molecularsurgeon.org, was developed for surgeons, surgical residents and fellows. Its intent is to inform surgeons of which diseases are more amenable to molecular biology methods of diagnosis and treatment and to explain the current application strategies. The faculty for the online course includes 17 experts in the field who presented at the Molecular Surgeon Symposium held at Baylor, where Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, chancellor emeritus at Baylor, provided opening comments. Baylor's Center for Collaborative and Interactive Technology designed the site. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/May_15_01/page_08.html |
