Assistance Center Program Changing May 31
Since its founding in 1982, the Assistance Center of Texas Medical Center has been jointly sponsored by The Assistance League® of Houston and Texas Medical Center. The Assistance Center has filled thousands of requests for information, transportation, tours and special events requests. After an orderly transition of activities, The Assistance League of Houston will terminate involvement with the Center, effective May 31, 2000. Texas Medical Center will continue to provide information through the Customer Service Call Center, 713-791-6161, or by e-mail at customerrelations@texmedctr.tmc.edu. Information may also be obtained at the Garage 2 Contract Parking Office, on Bertner Ave., just around the corner from the Assistance Center; hours are, Mon.-Fri. 8 a.m-5 p.m.; Sat-Sun., 10 a.m.-2 p.m. "The Assistance League of Houston volunteers have given much help to visitors to the Texas Medical Center over these years," says Dr. Richard E. Wainerdi, president, CEO and COO of Texas Medical Center. "I know we speak for all the member institutions when we express our sincere appreciation for all the League has done, including the annual Christmas at the Center, and we wish them much success in their other charitable projects." "We have some talented and wonderful ladies in the Assistance League of Houston, and several other projects that are exciting," says League president Mary Lamar. "We have had very fulfilling years at the Assistance Center, and we have enjoyed so much working with the people in the Texas Medical Center." Other Assistance League of Houston projects are: Operation School Bell, where the League donates two sets each of new clothes to 1,750 school children identified as needy by school counselors in the Houston Independent School District and the Spring Branch I.S.D.; Kids on the Block, where nearly life-sized puppets are taken into schools and perform plays and skits about self-esteem, gangs and drugs and other meaningful issues for children; scholarship programs at TIRR and Briarwood School; support for striving visual artists; and Assistance League of Houston Celebration of Giving, which will replace the Christmas at the Center. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/05_15_00/page_06.html |
