TWU Inaugurates 10th President/Chancellor

Dr. Ann Stuart was inaugurated president and chancellor of Texas Woman's University, the nation's largest university for women, during a formal ceremony on Fri., April 14. Dr. Stuart is the 10th president and first chancellor of TWU since its founding in 1901.

Dr. Stuart, who previously served as president of Rensselaer at Hartford in Hartford, Conn., joined the TWU community as president and chancellor on Dec. 1, 1999.

"During these four months, I have met and worked with outstanding faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends who believe in the mission of Texas Woman's University," says Dr. Stuart. Her background includes academic experience at several colleges and universities, as well as work as a consultant and an executive in both the public and private areas.

Dr. Stuart continues, "We hope through homecoming, honors convocation and our inaugural activities in April that we created excitement for our centennial celebration, too. We are having fun doing that - a process which prompts us to remember our past and look forward to the beginning of our second century of helping women achieve professional and personal success," she adds.

The new president and chancellor is focusing on several major areas of effort at TWU, which has campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston.

"Texas Woman's University has been a leader for decades in higher education for women. We must be vigilant and we must be on the cutting edge of academic programs, professional services, outreach efforts and technology in order to continue in that leadership role," adds Dr. Stuart. "As a state institution with a national reputation, TWU has built a legacy of excellence in higher education for women and service to citizens. That role will expand as we enter our next 100 years."
