- The Harris County Psychiatric Center will be offering free anxiety disorders and depression screening on Wednesday, May 5, at Northwest Mall's Community Room,
10 a.m-2 p.m. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the U.S., and 25 percent of the population will suffer from an anxiety disorder sometime in their lives - but only a quarter of the people will seek treatment. - Texas Children's Hospital 1999 Summer Wellness Camp has announced a schedule of six week-long programs for children ages 5-12. Camps are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday - Friday, with sessions beginning June 7 and July 12 (ages 5-7); June 14, 21 and July 19, 26 (ages 8-12). - Meeting the Health Care Needs of the Homeless, a conference co-sponsored by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine, May 27, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the VA Medical Center Auditorium, 2002 Holcombe Blvd. This conference is for health care professionals, medical students, social workers and others who assist homeless veterans and people who live on the streets or in homeless shelters. - From May 1-8, various collection sites throughout Houston will accept donated children's books for toddlers through 12 years old for the summer's "Houston Reads to Lead" children's summer reading program. The sites are all Whataburger restaurants, Pilgrim Cleaners, Super Cuts, AMC Theaters, Half-Price Books and Bank United branches. - The faculty and staff at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center not only take pride in caring for patients and conducting cutting-edge research, but also in educating and recognizing the cancer specialists of tomorrow.
Since 1997, M. D. Anderson Associates have sponsored the Trainee Recognition Day and Research Exposition - an event that showcases research conducted by the institution's graduate students, post-doctoral trainees and fellows.
This year's Trainee Recognition Day will take place May 20-21.
More than 100 scientific posters will be on display in the Robert C. Hickey Foyer and LeMaistre Ballroom at M. D. Anderson during the two-day symposium.
The top two recipients of both the AMGEN Award in Basic Science and the Bristol Myers-Squibb Award in Clinical/Translational Research will be announced and each will present their research on May 21 at M. D. Anderson Grand Rounds.
"Trainee Recognition Day is a wonderful way for M. D. Anderson to recognize the excellent research efforts by its trainees," says Dr. Tina Fanning, associate professor of anatomic pathology and chair of the Trainee Recognition Day subcommittee.
Prior to the symposium, trainees submitted abstracts of their work in basic science or clinical/translational research. A panel of judges, chaired by Dr. Catherine O'Brian, associate professor of cell biology, received 107 research briefs for their review.

- The 4th Annual March of Dimes Visiting Nurse Professorship in Nursing will feature Gretchen Lawson, B.S.N., Ph.D., director of the Pediatric Development Program at Children's Medical Center of Northwest Ohio. Dr. Lawson will present "Promoting Successful Families: Family Centered Caregiving." The lecture will focus on the critical elements necessary to achieve collaboration between family members and health care professionals, ways to apply relationship-based care during the perinatal and postpartum periods, and empowering families to accept their role as primary caregivers. The lectures are free and open to the public; they are scheduled on three days in five different locations:
