Nurse Camp Gives Middle School Kids Career Jump Start By PAUL HARASIM St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital This June, summer camp will be a whole lot more than swapping ghost stories around a campfire for 20 ambitious Houston seventh- and eighth-graders. St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital will host girls and boys chosen from Jackson and Dowling Middle Schools for a June 23 through 26 Nurse Camp. St. Luke’s clinical educator and registered nurse, Flo Schaefer, designed and coordinates the program, which provides inner-city students with valuable opportunities to begin learning about the significant roles nurses play. “Not only is it a good chance for the students to expand their horizons, but it’s also a great way for us to reach out to the community to generate interest in our profession, and to help develop the careers of young people,” said Schaefer. Nurse Camp will keep the students very busy. Each morning, the young people will attend two clinical demonstrations and make visits to the emergency room, catheteriation lab, operating and recovery rooms. Afternoons will be devoted to interactive discussions between St. Luke’s nurses and the students. Topics will cover the wide-ranging roles of nursing within and outside of a hospital setting. If the past is any indication, this summer’s camp will give the middle schoolers an eye-opening experience one that may help them determine the course of their future careers.
