Weeklong Summer Science Camps Enrolling Now
Solve a Crime, Dissect a Shark, See Real Human Brains!
The John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science is once again offering its popular summer camp series for children. Summer Discovery 2003 offers fun learning adventures in weeklong day camps that help children explore the wonderful world of science. Dissections, field trips to the Texas Medical Center, experiments and hands-on activities await young campers who register for the following programs:
Forensics & Crime Scene Camps
(ages 8 13)
June 9 13 and June 16 20
Theater and forensics activities guarantee a week of mind-bending mystery adventure. After observing a murder mystery performance, campers will map out a crime scene, gather evidence, analyze clues and solve a crime. Camp programs relate to the Museum’s summer exhibit, “Whodunit? The Science of Solving Crime.”
Mini Medical School Camps
(ages 11 13)
Session I runs
July 7 11 and July 21 25
Session II runs
July 14 18 and July 28 August 1
Now in their 6th year, these popular camps fill up quickly. Campers explore professions of health, medicine and science through fun, hands-on activities and field trips to the Texas Medical Center. Dissections and experiments highlight this program specifically designed for students keenly interested in biology, health and medicine.
BrainLink Camp
(ages 8 10)
June 23 27
Campers take a fascinating look at the human brain. New and updated activities have been added to the camp’s week of adventures. Still present are the popular sheep brain dissections, the opportunity to view real human brains, and a team competition involving designing, building, and crash testing safety helmets. Lots of hands-on activities for the brainiac!
Sensory Overload NEW!
(ages 8 10)
June 23 27
A new camp brimming with fun experiences that will peak questioning kids’ curiosity! Campers will discover, experience and understand their senses. They will participate in Sensory Deprivation Awareness Day, too!
Insects!
(ages 8 10)
July 21 25 and July 28 August 1
Collecting, dissecting and eating insects! Kids venture into the world of butterflies at the Cockrell Butterfly Center and learn how insects can play a part in forensic science.
Dissection Discovery Zone
(ages 14 15)
June 23 27
Campers complete a week of dissections of such animals as cats, rats, sharks and snakes and compare them to human organs and systems. Hands-on experiences abound in this camp designed for students interested in biology and dissections.
