Free Skin Cancer Screenings

In conjunction with the opening of its new Melanoma Center, St. Luke’s Texas Cancer Institute will offer free skin cancer screenings in May, designated as National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month.

Brian J. Miles, M.D., medical director of the St. Luke’s Texas Cancer Institute, noted that the incidence of reported melanoma cases has doubled in the last decade, giving it the distinction as the fastest increasing cancer in the United States. An estimated 54,000 cases of invasive melanoma were diagnosed in 2002, resulting in 7,400 deaths. At the current rate, one in every 75 Americans born today will develop melanoma – and one in every five of those will die from it.

Individuals interested in free screenings should call St. Luke’s Texas Cancer Institute Melanoma Center at (832) 355-6877. The Center is located on the second floor of the St. Luke’s Medical Tower at 6624 Fannin.
