Nursing Internships Offer Specialized Training
by DAVID MENDEL
Memorial Hermann Healthcare System
While many hospitals around the country struggle with the nursing shortage, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is rolling out the welcome mat for the freshest minds in nursing. Ten hospitals across the system are set to hire nurses for the 2002 internship program that kicks off in June.
"Our goal is to hire 225 nurses for the June internship program," said Margaret Loper, Memorial Hermann director of strategic recruitment. "We are looking to hire an additional 200 nurses to help meet staffing requirements as Memorial Hermann expands its facilities to meet demand for our services."
Nursing internships are available in emergency services, medical/surgical, intensive and intermediate care, operating room, orthopedics, telemetry, and many other hospital service areas. Most consist of intensive, 12-week programs.
The emergency services program comprises six months of both didactic (lecture and textbook) classroom and hands-on preceptor training (under the guidance of a medical practitioner) applied in real-world situations. All require a work commitment at the sponsoring facility upon completion.
"But from the very start, these nurses will be full-time Memorial Hermann employees with a generous benefits package," noted Loper.
An estimated 600 nurses will graduate from nursing programs throughout the greater Houston area in April and May. Loper said Memorial Hermann has been recruiting heavily not only at local nursing schools but at universities around Texas and across the country as well.
As a Level-I trauma center that treats more than 55,000 patients a year, Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center is among the Memorial Hermann hospitals that will offer emergency services nursing internships. The program is also available at six state-of-the-art suburban acute-care hospitals, including Memorial Hermann Southwest, a Level-III trauma center that sees more than 73,000 patient visits annually.
Among the other Memorial Hermann facilities hosting nursing internships are Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital, Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, Memorial Hermann Continuing Care Hospital, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and Memorial Hermann Fort Bend Hospital.
"Our hospital system has a lot to offer," said Loper, "and with locations all around greater Houston, nursing interns can work in a large medical center hospital or a smaller, community-based facility."
