Hearst Foundation Funds Gerontology Scholarships by PAM LEWIS The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston A $500,000 endowment from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation will fund scholarships for students in the master’s level geriatric nurse practitioner program at The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston. Dr. Vaunette Fay, director of the geriatric nurse practitioner program, said the endowment is very important to the school and its efforts to decrease the nursing shortage. "At this time, 50 to 70 percent of our nursing students are enrolled only part time, because they must work full time to support themselves and their families. The Hearst Scholarships will enable the Scholars to complete the program and get into the community work settings more quickly," she said. This fall, three first-year, full-time students will each receive $4,500 scholarships, and three second-year, full-time students will each receive $3,000 scholarships. Each fall semester, three new first-year students will be awarded scholarships, so there will be six Hearst Scholars at any time. The Hearst Scholars are required to take at least nine semester hours of coursework, be in good academic standing, and have a desire and commitment to work with the aging population in community-based care settings after graduation. The Hearst Foundation Endowment’s annual proceeds are estimated at $22,500. The endowment is one of five geriatric nurse practitioner program grants given nationally by the Hearst Foundation to increase the number of professionals trained to care for the nation’s growing aging population. Five master’s in social work grants were also awarded by the foundation.
