Black Nurses Association Holds Symposium at Prairie View A&M College of Nursing

Prairie View A&M College of Nursing was the site of a "Symposium on Women's Health," presented by the Black Nurses Association of Greater Houston April 7. Nearly 200 nurses attended the event, which included presentations on the human immunodeficiency virus, diabetes, coronary artery disease, menopause, and alopecia. Presenters included Ardis Bush, registered nurse and nurse manager at Ben Taub General Hospital; Sharon Newman, registered nurse and diabetes educator at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital; Dr. Lance LaMotte, senior cardiology fellow at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital; OB/GYN Dr. June Williams Colman; and dermatologist Dr. Seymour Weaver.

U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee sent a representative to welcome the audience. The first vice president of the National Black Nurses Association, Dr. Bettye Davis Lewis, provided the introductory greeting. Rev. Robert C. Jefferson, pastor of Cullen Missionary Baptist Church, gave the opening prayer, while Vern Washington, chaplain of the Houston chapter, gave the closing prayer.

"Nurse of the Year" was awarded to Lola Denise Jefferson, registered nurse in the Cardiac Care Unit at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. Alfreda Garrison, nursing student at Prairie View A&M College of Nursing, was awarded a scholarship.

Symposium sponsors included Dr. Dollie Brathwaite, Ruth Charlot, Kirk Collins, Rev. James Dixon, Cor Therapeutics, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Ethicon, Maude Harrison, Lola Denise Jefferson, Dr. Bettye Davis-Lewis, Merck, Ortho-McNeil, Prairie View Alumni, Renal Specialists of Houston, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Jennifer Tillery, and Unity Bank.
