The Emergency Medical Services

Program, one of 17 allied health programs offered at the Houston Community College-Southeast Health Science Center, has received an "exemplary" rating by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The highest rating the board can award a program came following a visit to HCC by more than 40 educators from throughout the state. The program is one of 12 HCCS workforce programs to achieve an exemplary status.

To be rated exemplary, workforce programs with licensure examinations must exceed a pass rate of 90 percent of all graduates and have a successful placement rate of 85 percent.

Emergency Medical Services offers one- and two-year programs to train EMT's and EMT-Paramedics, as well as continuing education courses for those in the workforce needing to update their skills. The program, which began in 1983, trains approximately 2,500 individuals each year. George Hatch, associated with the program since its inception, has served as chair since 1998, and Marion Cole, clinical coordinator, has been affiliated with the program since 1987.
