Medical Society Executive Remembered for Innovative Leadership James R. Hickox, former executive vice president of the Harris County Medical Society and longtime Houston resident, died March 16 in Bellville after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73. "We remember Jim Hickox as one who did not seek attention and accolades," said medical society President Dr. William H. Fleming III. "Jim had the remarkable ability to turn the concept and the dream into the tangible and achievable." Originally from Waukegan, Ill., Hickox came to Houston and joined the medial society in 1970, after spending 12 years with the American Medical Association. He served as the society’s executive vice president from 1974 until his retirement in 1992. Hailed as an innovative leader in medical association management, Hickox played major roles in two of the medical society’s most visible community projects – the creation of the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in 1974 and the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science in 1996. During his tenure, he oversaw the transport of medical relief supplies and medical teams to the survivors of central American earthquakes in the late 1970s, the publication and worldwide distribution of 2.5 million copies of one of the first general AIDS/HIV public health education books beginning in 1989, and the organization of a program for free care for patients who lost their jobs during the economic crisis in the early 1980s. Former President Ronald Reagan lauded the society for this pioneering private sector effort. After retiring, Hickox devoted much of his time to planning, developing and completing the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science – the most attended health museum in the country. Hickox is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anne, daughter Patricia Hickox Shute, sons John Reed Hickox and Daniel James Hickox, and brother George K. Hickox. – Harris County Medical Society ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/04_15_02/page_03.html |
