Texas Medical Center Honored with 2001 City Builder Award

South Main Center Association will recognize the Texas Medical Center with the City Builder Award at SMCA's 25th anniversary luncheon, Monday, April 23 at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center. Gov. Rick Perry will share his perspectives about the importance of health care and the contributions of the Texas Medical Center. Longtime Houston Chronicle publisher and Texas Medical Center board member Richard J.V. Johnson will make remarks about Houston's gift to the world - a "City of Medicine." Virgil Waggoner, a Houston businessman who is active on several Texas Medical Center institutions' boards of directors, is chairing the event.

"Houston is known world wide for energy, space and medicine. The Texas Medical Center is visited by those who seek the finest health care, training and research," stated SMCA Chairman E. Ashley Smith, who is also president of TIRR Systems. "It is SMCA's goal in making this award to showcase the Texas Medical Center as vital to the history and future of Houston's economy and urban fabric."

"The Texas Medical Center is the defining feature of the South Main corridor," stated SMCA President Susan Young. "Its record of excellence, gleaming towers, and beautiful parks and fountains attract highly-skilled physicians, researchers, medical service workers, students, and patients and their families from all corners of the globe. With the City Builder Award, we recognize the extraordinary vision, generosity and tenacity that have built the 42 member institutions of the Texas Medical Center into the world's largest medical center and Houston's largest single-site employer."

Other Houston organizations who have been City Builder Award recipients include the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and the Houston Endowment Inc.; local leaders including Dr. John P. McGovern, Mrs. Wesley West, Mayor Bob and Elyse Lanier; and individuals of international renown such as Dominique de Menil.

For information about attending the luncheon, call Katy Butterwick at SMCA at (713) 790-1020.
