“Guide Dog” Shows TMC Patients and Visitors the Way For those unfamiliar with the Texas Medical Center, the largest “medical city” in the world, the network of streets and institutions can often be intimidating. But fear not ... navigating the area is about to get easier. Sally Shaw, a Houston attorney, recently published a comprehensive guide called “Guide Dog,” which consists of a Texas Medical Center map, a travel guide, Web site information and a directory. Each of the hospitals is organized into five sections, including “Getting the Lay of the Land” (hospital building descriptions), “The Basics” (check-in, outpatient and visitor information), “Patient Services” (services available to patients), “Support People and Places” (different staff resources available to patients while in the hospital or transitioning to go home, as well as places within the hospital to “get away”), “Support Programs and Education Classes” (hospital-sponsored programs and classes for patients and their families), and “Additional Telephone Numbers” (services not included elsewhere in the section). In addition to the hospital information, the guide includes current and historical TMC facts, where to find subsidized air travel for patients, city transportation modes, housing options, community resources, places of worship, and restaurants and grocery stores, among other useful facts. “Guide Dog” may be ordered for $12.95 each, plus $3 for shipping and handling, and can be purchased online at http://www.guidedoginfo.com or by phone at (713) 622-2075.
