Making More Than Music

By EMILY MIR
Texas Children’s Hospital

Some time ago, volunteers created a happy home for Ronnie Rackley’s school-age daughter during her stay at Texas Children’s Hospital. Inspired by the gracious efforts of people he had just met, Rackley decided he, too, wanted to make a positive difference in hospitalized children’s lives.

“I figured if I can make a child’s hospital stay a little easier and a little brighter by volunteering just a few hours each week, then I’d be selfish not to do this,” said Rackley, Radio Lollipop volunteer.

The outgoing and energetic volunteer also is sensitive to what patients need. If a child is having an especially tough day, Rackley takes time to help with the evening’s craft project or answering a quiz question.

It’s been two years since Rackley made his commitment to the Texas Children’s volunteer services department, and since then he has devoted nearly 300 hours to Radio Lollipop, the hospital’s in-house radio station for patients. The program, completely run by volunteers and kids, broadcasts two evenings a week on “Terrific Tuesday” and “Thrilling Thursday.”

Like Rackley, most volunteers work full-time jobs, many have families, and all find time to help with art projects, contests and take song requests from patients who are unable to go to the studio.

“It’s definitely a juggling act,” said Rackley. “But it’s worth it when you realize that the station is more than music – it’s part of making kids feel better.”

Volunteers are needed Thursday nights and for a new show time on Sunday afternoons. Those interested in volunteering may contact Texas Children’s Volunteer Services at (832) 824-2255.
