FROM THE PRESIDENT

This issue of Texas Medical Center News recognizes the thousands of volunteers who contribute to the Texas Medical Center’s 42 member institutions.

Those individuals who give their time to volunteer in our hospitals add the important element of the human touch, and their friendly faces comfort patients, making them feel better while recovering. In addition to their interactions with patients, volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks and invaluable services that assist visitors and staff in hundreds of ways each day.

Many of these volunteers go to great lengths to assist the TMC institutions. Some travel a good distance to be here, and most work, many of them full time. Some are disabled, while others are recovering from serious illnesses.

This year, National Volunteer Week is April 21 to 27. The Texas Medical Center will hold its 17th annual "Salute to Volunteers" Thursday, May 2, at the Arabia Shrine Center, 2900 N. Braeswood, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. This year’s Texas Medical Center theme is "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." All Texas Medical Center volunteers are invited to attend this event, held in their honor.

The Texas Medical Center Volunteer Service Council challenges the community to recognize the history and shared traditions of volunteering, and to commit to volunteering as a unifying force to build a strong community today, so that the world is a better place for all tomorrow.

I encourage the readers of TMC News to try their hand at volunteering. Select a volunteer assignment that utilizes professional skills or a form of community service that taps into creativity. We salute and thank each and every person who volunteers in the Texas Medical Center for his or her time, talent and energy.

In closing, I’d like to share with you quotes from notable world leaders about the importance of volunteering:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has."
– Margaret Mead, anthropologist

"Small things, done with great love, bring joy and peace."
– Mother Teresa

"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."
– Winston Churchill
