New Women’s Health Network Focuses on Research/Education Collaborations

A new Women’s Health Network is coming to the Texas Medical Center. The network will bring together women’s health professionals from throughout the Greater Houston area to foster research and education collaborations.

The target audience for this new program encompasses all health professionals interested in women’s health, including clinicians, researchers, educators, administrators, and students. Participants will represent the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The project is led by Dr. Kathryn Peek, research professor and director of the Institute for Women’s Health at Texas Woman’s University, and Dr. Joey Weiner, physician and assistant professor in the department of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. To date, other members of the advisory board represent The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Rice University, the University of Houston, and the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library.

A kick-off event will be held Tuesday, April 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Houston Marriott Medical Center, located at 6580 Fannin St. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Wanda Jones, deputy assistant secretary for health (women’s health), Department of Health and Human Services. Other speakers include Dr. Janet Lawson, director of the Office of Women’s Health, Texas Department of Health; and Dr. Kathryn Stream, senior vice president of the Texas Medical Center.

Monthly seminars, a journal club, an interactive Web site, and a planned annual symposium will follow this event.

A moderated Women’s Health Network listserv has been set up to disseminate information about the network and the April 9 kick-off event. To subscribe to the listserv, send an e-mail message to listserv@lib40.library.tmc.edu.
