Marion and William "Bill" Heim have been named Shriners Hospitals for Children-Houston "Volunteers of the Year," Ed Homrighausen, director of volunteers at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Houston, recently announced.

"Marion and Bill’s unwavering dedication to the volunteers, staff and patients of Shriners Hospital makes them the perfect dynamic duo for our 2002 volunteers of the year," said Homrighausen. "Together as a couple, they display love, devotion and a strong work ethic to the Houston Shriners Hospital."

Married for almost 60 years, the Heims have volunteered at the Houston Shriners Hospital since 1979 and both currently serve on the News committee and regularly work at the fifth floor registration desk. Last year, Bill worked 354 volunteer hours and Marion worked 350 volunteer hours – adding up to a remarkable total. Bill has been a Shriner since 1970 and Marion has been a member of the Daughters of the Nile since 1974.

"We would put in even more hours, but we take a three-month summer vacation every year," said Bill. "We enjoy volunteering together, and really enjoy working with the patients and staff."

The Heims moved to Houston from New Jersey in 1978 when Bill retired from 41 years with General Electric, and Marion retired from Western Electric. After their move they became active at the Arabia Shrine Center.

In addition to this honor, Bill will receive the Golden Trowel Award this year – an award given for exemplary Masonic service by the Garden Oaks Masonic Lodge #1306.
