Sexagenarian Circles Texas Raising Funds for Texas Children’s Cancer Center by LAURA FRNKA Texas Children's Hospital A solo motorcyclist and sexagenarian is taking volunteering to a whole new level. For the third consecutive year, Catherine Rambeau, 67, will ride around the Texas border on her motorcycle to raise money for patients at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. "The dedication and commitment of volunteers like Rambeau is amazing," said Lisa Hereford, community relations coordinator for the Texas Children’s Cancer Center. "Her time and effort in helping the children at the cancer center is extraordinary. She volunteers in her own unique way." Starting her adventure in Conroe, Rambeau plans to ride through Killeen, Nacogdoches, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Austin and El Paso. Her ride will conclude at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, where she will greet patients and give them the opportunity to take photos with her and her motorcycle. "Too many of my friends have had cancer," said Rambeau. "It’s become a personal thing." Patients at the cancer center will be able to track her adventure city-by-city through weekly reports, media updates and press clippings. Children also can keep up with Rambeau’s journey on the Texas Children’s Web site. Named for her grandniece, Rambeau’s motorcycle, "Miss Sophie", took her on a Texas journey of more than 5,500 miles last year. Along the way, she visited more than 300 towns and 104 counties. Rambeau is a former Detroit Free Press film critic, Country Weekly magazine writer and editor, and the only American woman to ride a motorcycle from the United States to the southernmost tip of South America and back.
