Multiple Sclerosis Doesn’t Inhibit Volunteer from "Speeding Along" by NITA WEIL The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research Shirley Adcock became a member of The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research volunteer "family" on Feb. 2, 1999. Since then, she has volunteered her time in the gift shop three days a week, offering assistance to patients, family members and visitors. Among her duties, Adcock checks on layaways and on-hold items to see that they haven’t exceeded their time limit She also stocks, straightens and arranges merchandise, such as jewelry, candy, and sundries. Adcock cheerfully greets the different people who come into the store, and enjoys talking with and assisting the customers. Adcock is a member of TIRR’s Auxiliary board and gets a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that the proceeds generated by her work in the gift shop are spent on patients’ and other needs at TIRR. Before coming to TIRR, Adcock worked at Shell Oil Co. for 22 years in administrative, supervisory and staff positions. After she retired, she taught night school business classes and was an administrative assistant for a small company. Adcock has had multiple sclerosis for several years and uses a scooter for long distances. She has been a widow for several years and has two sons. The strength and resiliency that people possess constantly demonstrates man’s ability to give of himself and to exceed barriers, whether social, psychological or physical. Adcock is a prime example of this. She is an asset in every way and exemplifies the best of those who care enough to give their time to volunteer. The volunteers and staff at TIRR salute this remarkable woman. ©1996-2002 Texas Medical Center
