The Houston VA Medical Center recently joined communities across the country to salute the brave men and women who once wore the uniforms of the United States armed forces during the annual National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans.

"The National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans gives everyone a chance to let those who have given the nation so much know that their sacrifices are not forgotten," said Dr. Thomas Horvath, acting director of the Houston VA Medical Center.

"Our medical center's 670 volunteers are an integral part of our health care team and the National Salute is a great way for people to learn more about helping the veterans we serve," Dr. Horvath said.

Dr. Horvath said he hoped visitors to the Houston VA Medical Center learned more about the important roles volunteers play at the medical center, and perhaps would pursue volunteer opportunities themselves.

Actor Hal Linden - TV's "Barney Miller" - was chairman of the 2001 National Salute. The U.S. Army veteran visited VA medical centers during the National Salute and will continue to promote the VA's volunteer program throughout the year.

Individuals or groups wishing to participate in the center's volunteer program should call the Houston VA Medical Center Voluntary Service Office at (713) 794-7135.
