Conference Room Named for Cancer Pioneer By LAURA SUSSMAN The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Recognizing his 40-year career that included 10 years at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the institution recently honored Irwin H. Krakoff, M.D., with the dedication of a conference room named in his honor. The Irwin H. Krakoff, M.D., Conference Room features state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment and a plaque depicting Krakoff’s accomplishments. The room is located on the 13th floor of M.D. Anderson’s Faculty Center, a facility that houses more than 1,400 faculty and staff. Krakoff served for a decade as the head of M.D. Anderson’s medicine division. During this time, he and his colleagues built one of the world’s most respected new drug development programs. Before joining M.D. Anderson in 1993, Krakoff spent 23 years as one of the early pioneers in the development of chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. “Dr. Krakoff’s mentorship and leadership were a source of inspiration to me,” said Waun Ki Hong, M.D., current head of the cancer medicine division and a recruit of Krakoff’s, both at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, and again at M.D. Anderson. Hong credited Krakoff with promoting collaborative and translational research, and building the institution’s fellowship program into the training program it is today. Among many honors Krakoff received during his career was the 1993 David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award, the highest honor of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The award is named for the late David A. Karnofsky, M.D., an early leader in testing anticancer drugs and Krakoff’s mentor at Sloan-Kettering. “The years I spent at M.D. Anderson were unquestionably the most gratifying and prominent in my career,” said Krakoff at the dedication. “It’s not just bricks and mortar, but the people inside. I believe my memorial here will be the people who use this room. I shine in the reflected glory of what you are accomplishing.” ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/03_15_03/page_15.html |
