Tired from Cancer? Fatigue is the No. 1 side effect of cancer. In recognition of this real and treatable condition, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is hosting its annual Fatigue Awareness Week, March 31 through April 4. Cancer patients, survivors, family members, visitors and staff are invited to a week of free activities, presentations and information sharing to learn more about the treatment of fatigue. The week will begin with a MiniFair at 10 a.m., March 31, on the Rotary House crosswalk (Rose Zone, third floor), featuring free fatigue-related information and food samples. Massage therapy, side-effects management classes and demonstrations of relaxation techniques are some of the other activities planned for the week. April 1 features Lillian M. Nail, Ph.D., professor of nursing and senior scientist at the Oregon Health and Science University, who will speak on “Anemia in the Oncology Patient” at noon in Hickey Auditorium, Rose Zone, 11th floor. Nail is the recent recipient of the Oncology Nursing Society’s Distinguished Research Award, and is currently principle investigator of a National Institutes of Health study that focuses on symptom management in life-threatening illnesses. Clinical dietitians will be available April 3 from11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to talk about how patients can fight fatigue with food. Fatigue Awareness Week is an annual presentation of M.D. Anderson’s Patient Education Office. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/03_15_03/page_04.html |
