Orthopedic Symposium April 19 & 20 "Osteoporosis: An Orthopedic Epidemic" is the theme of St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital’s 38th annual Orthopedic Symposium to be held April 19 and 20 at the Houstonian Hotel. Although designed for the orthopedic surgeon, the symposium will feature topics of interest for all specialists who serve patients with osteoporosis. The symposium’s goal is to improve the care of osteoporosis patients by focusing on the latest information regarding risk factors for osteoporosis, medical treatment options, and strategies and techniques for the surgical repair of osteoporotic fractures. Symposium faculty include such nationally known speakers as Dr. Mohit Bhatnagar, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; Dr. Mark Bolander, Mayo Medical School; Dr. Joseph Lane, Cornell University’s Weille Medical College; Dr. Eric Orwoll, Oregon Health Sciences University; Dr. Steven Petak, The University of Texas Medical School at Houston; and Drs. Robert Gagel, Michael Heggeness, Gary Kiebzak, Ronald Lindsey, Kenneth Mathis and Kevin Varner, Baylor College of Medicine. St. Luke’s designates this continuing medical education activity for 11 hours in Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician Recognition Award. The cost before April 1 is $400 for physicians and $175 for residents and fellows. An ISCD Bone Densitometry Certification course will immediately follow the symposium. Participants enrolling in both the course and symposium will receive a 25 percent discount on the symposium and an additional discount on the ISCD course based on membership status.
