A wall of honor recognizing college supporters was unveiled Feb. 28 in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Baylor College of Medicine.

"The wall of honor serves as a symbol of the dedication that so many members of the community have displayed throughout the years," said Corbin J. Robertson Jr., chairman of the board of trustees at Baylor. "Their generous contributions have helped the college to become one of the most respected medical institutions in the country."

The wall was designed to identify and honor donors to the college and to welcome community members and visitors to the Baylor campus. It is a permanent tribute to the many individuals, foundations and corporations who have given a lifetime cumulative contribution of $200,000 or more to the college as of Dec. 31, 2000.

Designed, fabricated and installed by Wallach Glass Studio of San Francisco, the wall includes inspirational quotations, outlines the college’s mission areas and features a timeline of events. These elements are etched into crystal and the graphics and enzyme letter combinations, A T C G, were inspired by graph and chart presentations developed by the Genome Project researchers to map the human genome.

A dramatic dancer figure, created to express the beauty of the human body, appears on the wall’s side panel and was photographed by Lois Greenfield. The mosaic light bar, which spans the entire wall, serves as the main color element and was designed by Los Angeles artist Eric Zammitt. Thousands of laminated and carefully machined pieces of colored acrylic give the wall a flare of movement and the spectrum-like bars are built on a fractal formula and an expanded DNA spiral.

Participating in the wall’s dedication ceremony were Robertson, Dr. Ralph D. Feigin, president and CEO of Baylor; Dr. William T. Butler, chancellor of Baylor; Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, chancellor emeritus of Baylor; Mrs. Margaret Alkek, philanthropist; and John Scales, Baylor vice president for development.
