TSU’s Pharmacy & Health Sciences College Becomes Texas Medical Center Member Institution

Texas Southern University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences has joined the Texas Medical Center, becoming its 42nd member institution, announced Dr. Priscilla D. Slade, president of Texas Southern University, and Dr. Richard E. Wainerdi, president of the Texas Medical Center.

"In addition to enrolling 84 percent of African-American pharmacy majors in Texas, TSU educates 12 percent of the black and 8 percent of the total number of minority pharmacy students enrolled nationwide," said Dr. Slade, "and this affiliation with the prestigious Texas Medical Center will give additional opportunities for training for our students."

Dr. Wainerdi welcomed the new member institution, noting that the Texas Medical Center now has seven collegiate affiliations across its campus including TSU, Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas System, Texas A&M System, University of Houston, Texas Woman’s University, and the Houston Community College System.

TSU will have a physical presence on the Texas Medical Center campus, occupying space at 2450 Holcombe in a remodeled portion of the former Nabisco Bakery, which was purchased by the Texas Medical Center in 2000. The university will begin teaching, research, and service activities in this location this fall.

Dr. Barbara E. Hayes, dean of the TSU College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, has plans to maintain a high visibility and strong presence, enhance opportunities for research collaborations, contribute to pharmaceutical-care initiatives, and embrace all educational opportunities available for students. This membership will help TSU strengthen and expand the number of affiliation agreements with various TMC institutions to provide education and training for future health professionals.

"Our emphasis is in teaching, research and service focusing on the quality provision of health care. We look forward to our affiliation with the Texas Medical Center," said Dr. Hayes.

TSU has 750 students enrolled in the five pharmacy and health sciences programs (Environmental Health, Health Information Management, Health Administration, Medical Technology and Respiratory Therapy). Currently, 85 students participate in advanced pharmacy practice, medical technology, respiratory therapy and health administration rotations with several Texas Medical Center institutions.
