A Day of Celebration National Black Nurses Day was recognized by the Fort Bend County Black Nurses Association Inc., when they celebrated Feb. 1 at the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science. More than 200 nurses attended the event, where congressional candidates Chris Bell and Carroll Robinson mingled with the crowd. More than 20 vendors were also in attendance. Those joining the celebration received free blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose checks, and refreshments catered by A Taste of Art. The event chairs were Beulah Hadrick, Beryl Grady, and Lola Denise Jefferson, founder and president of the Fort Bend County Black Nurses Association. The association’s chaplain, Elizabeth Phashe, administered the opening prayer, and Jefferson gave the welcome and acknowledgements. Grady reported on a Jan. 31 trip to Austin, where the association’s members met with Gov. Rick Perry’s Deputy Chief of Staff Chris Britton. While in Austin, Grady, Dr. Bettye Davis Lewis, Tricia Lomax, Ruby Ferguson and JoAnn Goodie addressed the governor’s office about pressing issues facing the African-American community, including HIV, Medicare, the nursing shortage, and nursing education. Dr. Mary Holt Ashley, associate administrator and chief nursing officer at Ben Taub General Hospital, then delivered a lecture titled "Leadership: What it is to be a Black Nurse in 2002 at the event." Dr. Ashley challenged the group to pursue advanced degrees and higher career positions. One contract hour was given for this lecture. St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital – the first Magnet Hospital in Texas – was the event’s major sponsor. Other sponsors included Alberta White, Jay Henderson of Fred Haas Toyota, Lola Denise Jefferson, Brentwood Baptist Church, Carolyn Reades, Alanda Sweeny, Alene Jackson, Constable Perry Wooten, C. Lois Bradley, Dr. George Madjity, Edith Jones, Florine Melton, Frenchy’s, Dr. Kevin Smith, Marlon Henderson, New Age Imaging Service, Orange Wyatt, Bridget Scott Lanes, and Lisa Jefferson. – Lola Denise Jefferson, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/03_01_02/page_03.html |
