Health care providers who want to know the latest in treating travelers' unique medical problems can refer to a new book.

Textbook of Travel Medicine and Health, co-authored by Dr. Herbert L. DuPont, Mary W. Kelsey Professor of Medical Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, is the follow-up to Dr. DuPont's first edition of the same title and provides up-to-date guidelines and recommendations to help prevent disease and assure optimal medical treatment for travelers.

"Travel medicine is an emerging medical discipline," Dr. DuPont said. "This book provides a single source of information for physicians and paramedical personnel who want to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of the traveler."

Travel-related topics covered in the 548-page textbook include the environment and modes of travel, health promotion and disease prevention, travel for disadvantaged persons, malaria and other tropical and febrile illnesses, HIV, AIDS, diarrhea, hepatitis and accidents.

DuPont says some of the new features of the second edition include chapters on environmental changes, high altitude problems, swimming pool hygiene and emerging and re-emerging diseases. There is even a chapter on terrorism and security threats.

Textbook of Travel Medicine and Health is co-authored by Dr. Robert Steffen and includes a CD-ROM complete with text and illustrations. The book is published by B.C. Decker, Inc. in Hamilton, Ontario and is available at university and scientific bookstores. For more information, access http://www.bcdecker.com.
