by KATHY SALAZAR
Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Houston VA Medical Center and the American Cancer Society have created a "Dialogue Support Group" to help patients, their families and friends better deal with the challenge of cancer. The goal of the support group is to provide the opportunity for individuals to share common experiences, problems, and solutions in a supportive atmosphere. This group welcomes all those affected by cancer, both veterans and non-veterans, and their families.

Beginning March 7, 2000, the Dialogue Support Group will meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. in room 4C-145 in the Houston VA Medical Center. This room is located on Nursing Unit 4C near the Courtesy Quarters on the fourth floor and is easily accessed through the West set of elevators. The Houston VA Medical Center is located at 2002 Holcombe Blvd. Light refreshments will be provided during the meeting.

The first meeting of each month will include a guest speaker to present information designed to help patients and their families better understand and learn to live with cancer. The presentation will last approximately one hour and will be followed by general discussion among the members of the group. The second meeting of each month will be devoted to members sharing their experiences of living with cancer. The topic of the March 7 meeting is "Communicating With Your Doctor, Getting the Most Out of Your Doctor's Visit" presented by Dr. James Schourich, associate chief of staff for quality management at the Houston VA Medical Center.

The support group will be co-facilitated by Douglas Ensminger, staff chaplain, and Lisa Whipple, oncology social worker. For more information, contact Ms. Whipple at 713-791-1414, ext. 5273; Chaplain Ensminger at 713-794-7125; or the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
