Health Care Team Competition Marks a Decade by SHANNON RASP The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston is making final preparations for the 10th annual Health Care Team Competition, taking place Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the UT-Houston Medical School. The competition involves students from several local universities, including UT-Houston, Texas Southern University, and the University of Houston. The students, who are studying medicine, pharmacy, law, social work, or a variety of other disciplines, are divided into three groups. They are then presented with a test case designed to demonstrate and hone their problem-solving aptitude, their ability to work together as a group, and their knowledge of their courses of study. This year, the test case will concern errors made in the medical field. "The teams will be competing against each other to solve a complex medical issue before a panel of judges and a live audience," said UT-Houston President Dr. James T. Willerson. "The competition is designed to challenge the knowledge and critical thinking skills of the participants, enhance understanding about health-related disciplines, and encourage an interdisciplinary team approach to health care." UT-Houston Auxiliary Enterprises will supply $100 scholarships to each member of the winning team, who will also each receive an engraved award. Fifty-dollar scholarships go to those placing second, and $25 to those placing third. "We believe that by bringing students from different disciplines together to solve a health issue, they will be exposed to different perspectives, knowledge and skills and see the value of working together to solve a problem," said Linda Brannon, assistant vice president of academic affairs at UT-Houston. The competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. in room 3.001 of the medical school, 6431 Fannin. Three hours of validated parking is available in TMC Garage 4. A reception honoring the participating students will take place directly after the competition. ©1996-2002 Texas Medical Center
