The Health Law and Policy Institute at the University of Houston announces its first annual award to Texas employers that have implemented innovative solutions to provide better healthcare to employees. The Institute is recognized as one of the top health law programs in the country.

Eligibility
Employers must be Texas-based or have a significant Texas presence. Public, private, and not-for-profit employers are eligible. Three awards will be given, based on the employer's size:

  • Small employers (fewer than 50 employees)
  • Mid-size employers (50 to 500 employees)
  • Large employers (more than 500 employees).

Criteria
The award seeks to recognize employers that have identified and successfully implemented ideas to improve the affordability, access, or quality of healthcare programs provided to employees. Awards may be granted to employers that provide an overall comprehensive healthcare program including workplace health and safety, "wellness" programs, and provision of healthcare services. Alternatively, the award may be granted for a single innovative solution, e.g., where a small employer finds a creative way to fund previously unavailable healthcare insurance. Nominees should demonstrate a basic commitment to provide appropriate healthcare to employees.

Nominations
We are seeking nominations from employees, medical directors, human resource professionals, or others who may be aware of an employer deserving of the award. If you know of a company that deserves the award, please send us a nomination letter with the following information:

  • Why you believe the company deserves the award (in as much detail as possible)
  • Your name, address, telephone number, and relationship to the company
  • Name, address, and telephone number of the company, together with a contact person for the company such as an officer, owner, or human resource person
  • Approximate number of employees
