Baylor College of Medicine began a yearlong celebration of its centennial on Jan. 26 with the raising of a specially designed flag at Baylor Plaza in front of the Roy and Lillie Cullen Building, the first new building completed in the Texas Medical Center.

Baylor began in 1900 as the University of Dallas Medical Department and in 1903 formed an alliance with Baylor University, subsequently changing its name to Baylor University College of Medicine. In 1943, the College moved into temporary quarters in Houston, and in 1947 into the Cullen Building at its present site. In 1969, the College separated from Baylor University.

"Today marks the beginning of Baylor College of Medicine's celebration of 100 years of service to Houston, Texas and the world," Dr. Ralph Feigin, president of Baylor, told guests and staff who had assembled on the chilly afternoon to watch the flag being raised. "It is remarkable indeed that Baylor's first 100 years coincided with the 20th century - a time of great progress for Baylor and a time for the greatest advances in medical research and discoveries that the world has ever seen."

Following the brief remarks, Dr. Feigin, Baylor's chairman of the board of trustees Dan Arnold and chancellor emeritus Dr. Michael DeBakey hoisted the blue and white flag up the flagpole in Baylor Plaza.

During the ceremony, the Baylor Centennial Choir performed. The choir was formed last year by faculty and staff of Baylor and will perform at functions throughout the coming year.

"This is an exciting time for all of us," said Dr. Feigin in a message to employees. "Over the years, the College has made many important scientific contributions to medicine and it has been home to some of the world's greatest physicians and research scientists."

Baylor has educated over 11,000 physicians and residents. It ranks third among Texas universities - first among the state's medical schools - in research and development funding.
