February Marks 2nd Annual Festival for Little Hearts

The giant heart in the Museum of Health & Medical Science's Amazing Body Pavilion will once again take center stage as the Museum and its partners celebrate American Heart Month. The Museum - in partnership with the American Heart Association - will present special activities and programs about the heart throughout the month of February. The activities are generously sponsored by Astra Pharmaceuticals.

Activities for the young and young at heart brought more than 2,300 visitors to last year's Festival for Little Heartes. This year's event is scheduled for Feb. 20.

A highlight among this year's programs and lectures is the 2nd Annual Festival for Little Hearts, a free day-long family carnival presented in partnership with the American Heart Association and Hermann Children's Hospital. Last year, more than 2,300 visitors attended the event. Program organizers hope to attract nearly 6,000 people to this year's festival.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature live entertainment, jump rope contests, hands-on science demonstrations and exhibit booths all designed to help participants have fun while learning about the importance of making healthy choices. Other activities throughout the month include:

  • Congestive Heart Disease and the Adult Patient (FREE)
    Thursday, Feb. 11, 6 to 8 p.m.
    The Houston Cardiology Society and Cardiovascular Nursing Society of the American Heart Association present an evening with Dr. Joseph Perloff, the Streisand/American Heart Association Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA and director of the Ahmanson/UCLA Congenital Heart Disease Center. His exciting program will focus on the complex determinants of congenital heart disease. The evening for health professionals will start with a reception catered by Tony's At Home and is expected to be an informative and heartening evening. Register by calling 713-610-5064.

  • Weird Science Weekend: Heart Beats
    Thursday, Feb. 11, 4 to 7 p.m. (FREE);
    Saturday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
    Sunday, Feb. 14, Noon to 5 p.m.
    All weekend long, experience special crafts, games, hands-on activities, and a story hour that demonstrate that the beat of your heart is the pulse of your life. Programs also are available in Spanish.

  • Weird Science Saturday: Heart Beats
    Saturday, Feb. 13, 11 a.m., 12:30 and 2 p.m.
    Learning about the pulse of life doesn't have to be difficult, especially when Ernie and Maria, the museum's weird scientists, use their light-hearted humor to bring this topic to life. Real scientists from Baylor College of Medicine facilitate a family science activity following a brief demonstration by Ernie and Maria.

  • Inspiring Healthy Hearts - A Celebration of Houston's Diverse Women (FREE)
    Thursday, Feb. 18, 6 to 8 p.m.
    This intimate evening for women highlights the achievements of Houston's women. Dr. Edith Irby Jones, one of Houston's medical pioneers, mother and entrepreneur, is a keynote speaker for this prestigious event. This festival for improving your health includes interactive health activities, free health screenings, booths and giveaways from various health care organizations. The event also features a special exhibit illustrating the diversity of women in Houston. Register by calling the American Heart Association at 713-610-5015.

  • Cardiovascular Health Issues in the Texas Legislature (FREE)
    Friday, Feb. 26, 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
    This informative workshop for corporate wellness coordinators and health care professionals addresses issues such as minors' access to tobacco, automated external defibrillator legislation, physical activity in our schools, and the cardiovascular disease bill. Representatives from the Texas Legislature and the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate, will provide participants with cutting-edge information and answer questions from the audience about these important public policy issues.
