St. Luke’s Listed Among "100 Best Companies to Work For"

St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System has been named to Fortune magazine’s list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" in America. The list appears in the Feb. 4 issue.

This honor is based on the evaluation of many facets of applicant organizations, including compensation and benefits, work/life balance, and development and recognition opportunities. St. Luke’s, which Fortune said stood out because of its emphasis on teamwork, is the only health care institution in Texas to receive this recognition.

"We’re proud of our organization and grateful to the employees, volunteers and medical staff who made this award possible," said Michael Jhin, president and CEO for St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System. "We’re honored to be included in the company of such great employers. The majority of the score is based on how randomly selected employees respond to a confidential survey that measures the quality of workplace culture; we’re honored that our employees are so pleased with our St. Luke’s work environment. Our greatest strength has always been the quality of our employees, volunteers and our medical staff. This recognition is a result of their hard work and dedication and is a tribute to the entire St. Luke’s community."

One of the workplace culture items taken into special consideration this year was the fallout from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Because the employee surveys were tallied a few weeks after the attacks, all candidate companies were asked what they had done in response to the tragedy. Like most of the other companies on the "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, St. Luke’s made special efforts to remain mission ready by educating employees about bioterrorism, as well as providing spiritual and emotional support and guaranteeing the difference between military pay and reservist employee salaries.
