Genetics Course for Laypersons
Begins Feb. 19

Genetic researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University will discuss new developments in genetics in a course offered to the public this spring at Rice University. "The Promise of Genetic Research: Preventing and Treating Disease" meets Tuesdays, Feb. 19 through April 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The fee is $145. Designed for the lay person, the course will cover gene mapping, gene sequencing, genetic therapy and related ethical issues, and how gene replacement could help fight breast cancer. The course will also feature a tour of the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor.

Course lecturers include Drs. Steven Scherer and Graham Scott, assistant professors at Baylor’s Human Genome Sequencing Center; Dr. Powel Brown, associate professor and director of Baylor’s Breast Cancer Prevention Center; Dr. Malcolm Brenner, professor and director of Baylor’s International Center for Cell and Gene Therapy; Dr. Robin Couch, Rice University research scientist; Dr. Tristram Engelhardt, professor of philosophy at Rice and professor emeritus of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor; and Dr. Marek Kimmel, professor of statistics and leader of the Rice University Bioinformatics Group.
