Higher education faculty and students in the Houston area are invited to attend "Advances in Teaching and Learning Day 2002," from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, at the University Center Tower, 7000 Fannin.

Hosted by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, the event is the third annual conference to showcase research and innovations in teaching, learning and technology by faculty in the Texas Medical Center community.

The conference gets underway at 9 a.m. with five "Best of Show" presentations by faculty representing UT-Houston’s component schools. The morning session and keynote speech will take place on the 15th floor of University Center Tower, with the keynote address streamed live on the Web. The rest of the event will take place on the eighth floor.

"Designing Powerful Instruction for the Web" will be the topic for the noon keynote speaker, Dr. James D. Slotta, research cognitive scientist and director of the Web-based Inquiry Science Environment project at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California at Berkeley. Funded by the National Science Foundation, WISE provides a framework within with teachers can develop Web-based instruction. In the past three years, through partnerships of scientists and educators, WISE has completed more than 50 activities with about 3,000 teachers and 30,000 student participants.

Concurrent sessions from 1 to 3 p.m. include individual faculty presentations; a panel discussion on "Your Personal Definition of Teaching Excellence;" a session on "Funding Opportunities for Health Science Education;" and a demonstration of "Web Faculty," an online enrollment and grading system.

Poster and computer-based sessions by individual faculty from The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Rice University and UT-Houston will follow from 3 to 5 p.m.

"Now in its third year, Advances in Teaching and Learning Day is expected to be better than ever with its expansion to include TMC institutions," said Dr. Doris L. Ross, dean of the School of Health Information Sciences. "All those who teach students or who train others in health-related positions will gain from attending."

Conference registration is free, and includes free lunch for the first 100 participants and free parking in the University Center Tower parking garage until the garage is filled. Because of limited space, use of TMC shuttle buses is encouraged. Pre-registration is available on the Web at http://www.shis.uth.tmc.edu/school/TeachingDay/Index.cfm. Registration before the day of the event ensures a bound version of the abstracts. All abstracts will be published after the conference on the UT Electronic Press.

The conference is sponsored by the UT-Houston Office of Academic Affairs and School of Health Information Sciences.
