Feb. 9 Forum Focuses onCardiovascular Disease Prevention

Six medical professionals will present the latest practices in cardiovascular disease prevention among children and adults at the 12th annual Preventive Cardiology Forum, jointly sponsored by The University of Texas Medical School at Houston Office of Continuing Medical Education and The American Heart Association. This year’s forum, "A Practical Approach to Cardiovascular Disease Prevention," will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

"The medical professionals and the topics they will be presenting at this year’s forum are vital to our efforts to continuously advance in the fight against heart disease and stroke - the nation’s number one and number three killers," said Dr. Francisco Fuentes, professor of medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and the forum’s program director. "Cardiovascular disease continuing education plays an integral role in achieving our goal of reducing disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 25 percent by the year 2010."

Forum topics include: Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis in Children and Adults, presented by Dr. L. Maximilian Buja, UT-Houston Medical School dean; Exercise Recommendations and Cardiac Rehabilitation, presented by registered nurse Rhonda S. Leaverton; Modern Practice of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Adults, presented by Dr. Patrick E. McBride; The New NCEP Nutrition Guidelines – Translating Them into Practice, presented by licensed and registered dietician Sharon Smalling; Community Approach to Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, presented by Dr. Carlos Vallbona; and Modern Practice of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Children, presented by Dr. Christine L. Williams.

A total of 4.5 CME hours and 4.8 CNE hours will be awarded for attendance. Medical professionals can attend the forum free of charge. Registration is open through Friday, Feb. 8. For more information call De’Quisha Coleman at (713) 610-5064.
